No, the Brexit saga isn’t over yet. With less than seven weeks to go the negotiations has reached critical crunch time for a deal, as both sides will seem some time to dot the I’s and cross the T’s if any deal can be agreed.
Where are we with the negotiations right now? Well, not very far I’m afraid. The three major contentious topics (Fisheries, State Aid and Financial Services Equivalence) have not seen any meaningful compromises or breakthroughs.
Both sides have had plenty of time to kick the can down the road and hope that the other party will concede, and the danger right now is that both sides continue to hope for a compromise and then realize that time has run out.
Another clear risk is that either party tries to play hard ball and officially walk away from trade talks to try and force the other party to the table, but the danger of this is that the bluff backfires and ends up with an unintended no-deal outcome.
So, with all of these potential risks on the table, how has the Pound been taking the growing possibility of a no-deal outcome? Not bad at all, but more on that in this week’s week ahead video.
