I climbed up 700+ steps up El Peñón! One of the coolest spots i've traveled to! Colombia has so much to offer, and I recommend everyone visits!
"El Peñol is a giant rock known as 'la piedra más grande de Colombia' (the biggest stone in Colombia). It weighs 66 million tonnes and contains granite and quartz. The first documented climb was in 1954 when three men took five days to reach the top. Nowadays, it takes 740 steps to reach the very top of the man-made tower at the summit. We found that the weather in this part of Colombia changes every twenty minutes or so - we saw both the sun and rain during our climb. The clouds lifted enough at the top for us to enjoy the gorgeous view of the surrounding lakes and landscape. You'll notice what looks like a 'GI' written on the northern face of the rock. The monolith is situated between two towns, Guatapé and El Peñol, and each has fought over ownership over the years. One day the people of Guatapé decided to settle it once and for all by writing 'Guatapé' in huge letters. By the time they had finished the 'G' and the first vertical line of the 'U' the people of El Peñol had taken notice and assembled to stop it. All that remains is an unfinished name and a part of local history that hasn't washed away."
